How do real estate agents get paid?
In Colorado real estate agents generaly get paid by sales commissions. Without a sale there are no moneys due. In general the seller of property will negotiate with the listings agent the total commission due on successful sale of the property. The commission has two parts. Normally half of the commission will be due to the agent that finds the buyer to the transaction and the other half is remuneration for the listing agent.

An agent that is part of a brokerage company will act as a general contractor in the network. I am for example part of The Aspen land & Homes Sotheby’s International Realty network. For using the office facilities and general access to all things Sotheby’s I am sharing my commission with my “employing” broker.

As a buyer there is normally no commission due for finding you that special Aspen property. Just find a good agent and enjoy the process of exploring your options and clinching that perfect deal..
