The prepayment penalty is the possible consequence of a pre-payment of a mortgage. If the mortgage was take out subject to a pre-payment penalty this penalty is triggered by paying part or the entire mortgage off before its due date.

The penalty can be several months’ interest, generally whatever was stipulated in the mortgage contract.
